A brief history of Greenwich Rugby Club

Founded in 1986, Greenwich Rugby Football Club (GRFC) has been rooted in community spirit from the very beginning. The club was officially formed through the merger of two local sides, Bloomfield and Lewisham Rugby Clubs, strengthened further by players from STC RFC. The newly united club made its home at the old cricket pavilion on Plumstead Common, Old Mill Road (SE18 1QJ) — a location it proudly occupies to this day.

What makes GRFC truly unique is its shared environment. The club’s pitch on Plumstead Common is not closed off from the community; it is a space enjoyed daily by local residents, dog walkers, families, a range of leisure users and students from Plumstead Manor School who often use the space for exercise and sporting activities. This open and inclusive setting reflects the club’s commitment to being an accessible and visible part of the local area.

GRFC also proudly supports community events, including hosting the annual Make Merry Festival each June. Recognised as the longest-running community festival in the Royal Borough of Greenwich, this event has brought people together since 1975 and highlights the club’s role beyond rugby as a hub for local engagement and celebration.

Despite the challenges faced during the COVID-19 pandemic, which impacted membership and participation, GRFC has focused on rebuilding not only its playing squads but also its community connections. The club is entirely volunteer-led and invests in training and development across coaching, refereeing, leadership, and safeguarding — strengthening both the club and the wider grassroots sporting network.

Above all, GRFC remains committed to providing a welcoming, inclusive environment for players, families, and the wider community, ensuring that Plumstead Common continues to be a place where sport and community come together.
